LABORATORY SERVICES AT WASSO HOSPITAL

Sister Madeleine Somo Head of Laboratory Department

Laboratory Services at Wasso Hospital

The Laboratory Biomedical is a key element of Wasso Hospital. Sister Madeleine is the head of this department for 4 years and she is collaborating with 5 other laboratory technicians. Open 24/7, the laboratory analyses between 10 and 40 samples per day. The laboratory is offering multiple analyses and investigations in stool, urine, blood and saliva : parasitology, bacteriology, serology, smear test, or blood donation. Wasso hospital faces numerous cases of tuberculosis, HIV, malaria, syphilis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, typhoid, brucellosis, meningitis… They are working with a microscope and an old sputum analysis machine, so results are not always really precise. As well, the blood supply is poor, many patients suffer from anemia, and the refrigerator is inadequate. They need a new one, a professionel one, and an adapted chair for the sampling would facilitate the various donations. To improve this key department, they need new and more recent machines such as : a Full Blood Pictures Machine, a hormonal analysis machine, a new microscope … Also, a computer with a system which can register all the patient and all the analysis can save time, improve accuracy, enable better transfer of information between departments and avoid losing files. The Laboratory of Wasso Hospital does not perform antibiotic susceptibility testing, which is necessary to give the right treatment directly to the patient.
